Teachers
The book METRO O1O is not only beautiful and multifaceted to look at, but it also touches on a large number of current themes that are important in the world of young people and that are linked to the school curriculum: diversity, livability, inclusion, sustainability, (in)equality, climate and the energy transition. To make it as easy as possible for teachers to use the book in the classroom, we worked with education experts to develop a series of questions to accompany the various chapters. These 24 assignments, in the back cover of the school edition of the book, can be worked on in different ways: individually or in groups, thinking or doing, in the classroom or outside on the street, at school or at home, with family or friends.
Classroom materials
Some of the 24 questions are linked to more extended comprehensive classroom materials. These educational materials, in PDF, are suitable for different subjects, they tie in with the various chapters of the book and cover a variety of themes. On the first page of each PDF, you will find a handy summary that explains the content and implementation of the class. Behind it are the relevant appendices.
The document indicates the number of hours involved in the question, the learning objectives, whether it is an individual question or for a group, the subjects to which the question belongs, and the teaching methods used. Some classes cross disciplines and can be used as an overarching project. This is indicated using clear icons, the same as in the back cover of the book METRO O1O. Thus, the book can be integrated into the existing curriculum in various ways and “plug-and-play” by teachers. The workload of teachers is high, the teaching materials allow them to integrate the book into the ongoing teaching materials as easily as possible.
Most of the classroom materials were prepared in cooperation with the education department of the Central Rotterdam Library. In addition, lesson plans have been developed by partner institutions such as UrbanGuides (excursion), Passionate/Bulkboek (writing assignment), the New Institute and Digital Playground.
Workshops
Teachers will receive, along with the PDFs, a list of organizations and freelance educators offering workshops, be it at school or at their own institution. These workshops are selected on different themes and disciplines, but the central focus is always architectural education in a broad sense.
Thus UrbanGuides offers an excursion with a workshop on the colonial past of Rotterdam, RotterdamTours teaches young people in a workshop how to give a tour of their own neighborhood, schoolchildren make a Zoop of their school in a series of lessons led by Omleiders from the New Institute, young students design the eco-city of the future with the Cultuurschool or can write an ode to their city Rotterdam with one of our spoken word poets. The school edition of METRO O1O will be distributed for five years to all 7500 seventh grade students (age 11/12) in Rotterdam, with the aim of getting to know the city better and discovering that they themselves are City Makers of the city. Their city!
